The children always prefer technology in their curricular activities in nearly every aspect of life, and the parents are helpless there as they want to teach them as well.

Here we are going to discuss the tips and tricks that might be useful for the parents to tackle the use of technology among their children.

Effects Of Out of Limit Screen Time

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the average child spends seven hours a day with technological devices like television, laptops, tablets. The excessive screen time can lead to many health and mental problems like depression, obesity, poor academic performance, bad behaviours, sleep deprivations, poor body image and many more. The more screen promotes the incidents of anxiety and depression, it also causes psychological disorder.

Being a parent you might be heading yes to the above given problems and thinking that if you wipe out all the objects they will become normal and act accordingly. But, in my opinion, boosters are always a better option than eradication. The use of technology must have checks and balances, because we also have to bring our child into a technology based culture. The better way is to limit their screen time by developing and utilizing family screen time boundaries.

How To Set Screen Time Boundaries

As setting screen time boundaries are required so first determine how much time your child is currently giving to the technological devices. Conduct the screen time and also the time they are spending with family and engaged in other activities. Then compare your outcomes with the american academy of pediatrics guidelines:

  • The children under 18 should only be allowed to video chat.
  • The children from 18 to 24 months  should be allowed to choose high quality programming and apps, watch those with them and that’s how your child will learn best.
  • For children from 2 to 5 years the screen time should be limited to only one hour a day, watch with them to ensure they are watching a high quality program.
  • Those who are 6 years old and older must have consistent time to watch and limit the type of media they can have access to. Keep an eye that social media is not taking the place of adequate sleep, outdoor activities and those aspects essential to health.
  • Design a media free time such as dinner, a walk or driving. Also prepare media free locations at home like bedroom or study room.
  • Have ongoing conversations about what is happening in the world, how to communicate with others, also about online citizenship and safety.

After following the above mentioned guidelines, it’s time to consider following steps to ensure healthy screen time boundaries.

Be a Role Model

We all know children tend to copy what the elders do, so why not be a model like what we want them to be. If you spend long hours on mobile phones and watch television over night. Your child will follow you. It is necessary to follow the boundaries you made for them.

Have a Conversation

Having appropriate conversation about the use of technology can do wonders. When your child is young enough to discuss something with you. Build a dialog where they are safe to talk about, so that they can open a dialogue themselves if there is a problem. Dialogue means listening and speaking as well. The ratio of parents listening to speaking is at least five to one. It means spending every minute you talk should be at least  five minutes of listening to this.

Set Up Places Without Screen

Having screens in the bedroom distract children from getting sleep and indulge into screen activities. If the screen is there it will promote lower test scores, sleep deprivations. Screens compel adults and children to view things, they would not if the screen were placed in another area of the house. Having screens in the common area is good as the parents can have an eye on what kids are watching.

Watch With Children

Have some time to give to your children. Watching screen with your child opens doors of conversation around what is being watched and how it affects lives. That’s how the parents get a chance to elaborate the effects and meaning of content within the video game, a family movie and social media stuff.

Obtain Passwords

As a parent it is your right to have passwords of their social media accounts so that you can see what they are posting and who they are interacting with. Parents must check out where your child is going and whom they are with whenever they are out. When your child is using social media, sit with them, go through their posts and post of their friends, it provides you a chance to teach them social media etiquette.

Technology is full of advantages and has harmful effects. It depends on the parents and the brought up of children how they will tackle what is happening in social media. Parents are the real teachers when it comes to technology.

Summer Tips For Parents

The months of June, July and August are considered to be warmer months. But does anyone notice what they bring for us? What do they do that is special for the students and children? If not, then I can count that on my fingertips. These months bring joy, happiness, playing with siblings, reading, riding, holidays, travelling to northern areas and mountains and what not. Yes, being a parent, the tasks might get a bit difficult, the responsibilities, burden, time to time foods, cooking can make life a little busier and hectic. So what? Don’t you love your kids? you must say yes.

Here I have brought some implementable summer tips for parents that can make a warm day happier and healthier.

  1. Compose a Structure

In these 3 months of holidays, don’t distract your kids from their schedule. Apart from the school and tuition timing, make a schedule at home. In school, they learn to be punctual so use the trick in vacations as well. Give them space and flexibility for sure.

Making a consistent bed routine, waking them up around the same time, and preparing meals following your schedule will create a sense of rhythm in the body, helping to stabilize everyone’s mood including yours. Kids love to get attention, so involve their voice in decision making tasks whether it is about watching a family movie or what we’re gonna eat next.

  • Assign Tasks Suitable to the Age

Naturally, the parents want their children to work with them at home, but making the children realise this can be much challenging. Kids like to be valued, so make them feel important through our conversations about how they can be helpful to you. The best way to do this is to make a chores chart, a task per day/week, assign them to the kids according to their age. Never say no if they want to do any task with you such as preparing a meal, doing laundry, or cleaning. They may not do it professionally or take more time, be patient, your kid is learning to be a successful adult.

  • Give them Space to Imagine

While preparing structure for them, don’t neglect their personal space where they can see the world or imagine things on their own. Add a “ Free Time “ for your child, and give them space to think of new activities, challenges, and creativity that include drawing what they imagine, writing a story, reading books, shooting hoops, going for a walk, riding scooters, bikes or whatever they are fond of. Also include house chores, offer them to be out of their comfort zone.

  • Practice the Learned Skills

Practicing the skills is another addition to the summer doing chart. In the months between May and August, the students lose ground in academic eras like Math, or English. It happens  because these things are less practiced in the vacations.

The months of June, July and August are the great times to encourage children to practice concepts they perform poorly or polish the areas of their special interest.

The instructors can help the parents in this case. Talk to them to get to know your children’s abilities and disabilities. You can arrange activities at home and reward the kids where they stand perfect, the siblings learn from each other as well. Hence, the education will proceed in a fun way!

  • Go For Travelling

You may hear the phrase “ Traveling is the Best Education “. so, implement this when you have much time to spend with your children and mold their lives according to what is good for them. Whether you want them to learn, to eat, to be social, to interact with people out of home, or to make friends, get them to travel. They will be open in front of you, they will learn to speak. Outdoors is not always out of the country, it can be out of the city or even out of home. It can be a study tour as well, where they will find things related to their curricula.

  • Stay Hydrated & Sun Protection

During all the indoor, outdoor activities, don’t forget we are in warmer months, so staying hydrated must be your priority. Heat waves affect the children more than the elders. Drink water according to the doctor’s recommendation and health requirements.

Sun protection is another area that must not be forgotten during summers. The experts recommended using sunblocks every two hours especially when the kids are engaged in outdoor activities like swimming, playing in a park and sweating.

  • Never leave our kids in cars isolated

Leaving children in cars is alarming and can be life threatening. The temperature inside the car can skyrocket within a few minutes. Even a few moments can be dangerous when the air condition is switched off. Neither lock up car without checking nor leave your child unattended for a while. It is better to place something important at our backseat like a reminder, cell phone, or a bag, it will remind you of your precious child.

  • Schedule Exercise

Who doesn’t enjoy exercising? The parents and their children as well. Adding exercise in the daily routine boosts your physical as well as mental health. It is not about the gym but includes a few yoga steps, walking around the block, riding a cycle around the neighborhood. This activity must make you and your child less stressed and relaxed after a hot day.

So, there are many ways which the parents can adopt to make their children healthier, happier and stress free during their summer vacations.
